Throughout her career Lizzo has shared details about her health journey, explaining that she’s not interested in doing anything dramatic.

“I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” she told The New York Times earlier this year.

As a result, her fans seem to be noticing her weight loss more than she does.

“I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight-loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it,” she said. “Also the scale’s not really moving. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud of my current lifestyle.”

Lizzo has developed a fitness routine that fuels both her body and mind and it seems to be paying off. Here’s what we know about the singer’s health journey and some of her go-to workouts.

She denied rumors she lost weight with Ozempic

Lizzo clapped back at the rumors she’s gotten assistance from drugs amid her recent weight loss.

In an Instagram post on Sept. 20, the singer singled out a particular follower who suggested that she may be one of the celebrities taking Ozempic as an explanation for her weight loss. Instead, she clarified that for the past five months, she’s been focusing on “weight training and calorie deficit.”

Lizzo has been focusing on her health and protecting her ‘peace’ throughout the last year

In November 2023, Lizzo shared a bathroom selfie on Instagram and revealed that she was taking the time to prioritize herself.

“I’m working.. on music, myself, relationships with people and food, my anxiety, my body, my business, and my trust issues with the world.. but they are deep now, deeper than they’ve ever been,” she wrote.

Two months later, she modeled activewear from her clothing line. “New year, new me,” she said in the video.

The singer also shared a video montage of her body and mental transformation over the last few years.

“I wasn’t gonna post this on IG but 2021 me would be soooo proud of 2024 me. And I’m NOT only talking about my body if yall only KNEWWWW what I’ve done for my mental & emotional health in the last year… wheeeew don’t worry imma write a album about it 🤭,” she captioned the post.

She doesn’t exercise to be thin

When it comes to working out, being thin isn’t Lizzo’s end goal.

In 2023, TikTok creator @tiffriahgrande posted a video explaining that not everyone exercises because they want to lose weight. In response, Lizzo shared her own video and agreed with that sentiment wholeheartedly.

“Heavy on the not trying to escape fatness,” she said.

The singer then explained that she simply wants to live a healthy lifestyle and focus on her mental health.

“I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin,” she said. “I’m not trying to be thin. I don’t ever want to be thin. Will my body fluctuate from this size? Will I get a little smaller depending on some of the choices I make or a little bigger, depending on some of the choices I make in my life. Yes, I’m used to fluctuating.”

She loves jump rope workouts

Jump rope workouts are a great way to sneak in some cardio wherever you are and can help build motor skills/agility while helping you lose fat and build muscle strength. In other words, it’s no wonder Lizzo is a fan of the fun exercise method.

In 2020, the singer shared a video of herself doing a jump rope workout outside while her personal trainer cheered her on. In August 2024, she posted a TikTok video of herself working out with a jump rope while vacationing in Bali.

“I’m whooping my a–,” she exclaimed during the intense cardio session.

She started Pilates to ‘heal’ her back and stuck with it

In 2023, Lizzo shared a TikTok video of herself at the gym and revealed that she started practicing Pilates to “heal” her back and now “cant stop.” Throughout the clip, the star did a series of moves using an exercise ball and machines.

While talking with The New York Times in 2024, the singer spoke about her love for the form of exercise.

“I’m taking the time every day to put some love into my body,” she said. “There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”

She’s not worried about other people’s idea of an ‘ideal’ body

Lizzo has always eschewed beauty norms. In 2020, she took to TikTok to make it clear that she’s not concerned about other’s opinions of her body.

“Hey. So I’ve been working out consistently for the last five years, and it may come as a surprise for some of y’all that I’m not working out to have your ideal body type. I’m working out to have my ideal body type,” she said in the video. “And you know what type that is? None of your f—— business.”

She starts some mornings with a healthy smoothie

Lizzo shared a video of her healthy morning routine in February 2024 and revealed that from time to time she likes to start the day with a smoothie made of cocoa energy powder, almond milk, banana and ice.

“My biggest flex is I am now an almond milk girlie. Though it tastes like a–, it has less calories,” she said.

Her meals look different now that she’s no longer vegan

In October 2024, Lizza shared a video featuring everything she eats in a day as a former vegan.

She starts her day with lemon water, followed by breakfast made of egg white cups, cauliflower hashbrowns and fruit. Next up is a glass of okra water, a buffalo chicken lettuce wrap with some mustard and homemade peach tea. For dinner, the singer opted for grilled chicken, asparagus and carrots.

She gets her cardio in on the treadmill or by walking outside

When it comes to cardio, Lizzo enjoys walking outdoors or on the treadmill but doesn’t go overboard.

“So because my Pilates regimen is pretty intense, I don’t go crazy on the treadmill. I just walk and I would actually prefer to walk outside, but you know. I like to walk because any stress, any anxiety, any tension, any anger that I’ve had in my body, I kind of forget about it by the time I’m done walking,” she said in a TikTok video earlier this year.

The singer then encouraged her fans to put “mental health first” in their workout routine and not “stress yourself out” on exercise equipment “more than you have to.”

Her views on body positivity have evolved

The 36-year-old has always been known as a body positivity advocate and she’s never shied away from showing off her beautiful curves. But her perspective has admittedly changed a bit over time.

“The idea of body positivity, it’s moved away from the antiquated mainstream conception,” she said. “It’s evolved into body neutrality.”

With this in mind, the 36-year-old is now more honest than ever when it comes to how she feels about her body.

“There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive,” she said.

She’s seriously strong

Lizzo doesn’t skimp out on her strength training routine. In recent years, she’s shared several videos of herself killing her workouts at the gym. From weight lifting to rope exercises and everything in between, the singer is seriously strong as hell.

She does circuit training

Lizzo recently shared a video with some highlights of her circuit training workout, which consists of a series of exercises, including squats and weight lifting.

“I do circuits. So I do three rounds of three to four different exercises about 12-15 times,” she explained.

Lizzo’s workout also incorporated moves with an exercise ball and a kettlebell.

She’s realistic about weight fluctuations

Nobody’s weight stays static year after year, and Lizzo is very transparent about that.

In 2021, the star posted a video montage of the changes her body had been through in recent years and shared the following caption: “It’s ok to change. I love every stage my body fluctuates to. The feats your body pulls off everyday to function is iconic honestly.”

The following year, Lizzo shared an Instagram video of herself dancing in her bathroom along with the following caption: “I gained weight💅🏾 I look TF GOODT😍.”

While chatting with Vanity Fair in 2022, the star said it’s unfortunate that people “associate weight gain” with food.

“It’s mixing this beautiful thing that’s food—and nourishing ourselves with it, but it’s the stress that’s the bad thing, not the 20 pounds. I feel very lucky because I don’t feel that weight gain is bad anymore. Nor is weight loss—it’s neutral. And food is fun. I love eating, and I have a chef now, and I’m not thinking about it. I had a brownie last night,” she said.

Health is her overall priority

Lizzo isn’t obsessing over the number on the scale and she knows she can never win over her haters. After all, she’s been criticized for gaining and losing weight over the years. But these days, she’s mostly focused on staying healthy.

“I lead a very healthy lifestyle—mentally, spiritually, I try to keep everything I put in my body super clean,” she told Vanity Fair. “Health is something I prioritize, wherever that leads me physically. Like veganism, people were like, ‘You’re a vegan? What, are you deep frying the lettuce?’ I’m not a vegan to lose weight, I just feel better when I eat plants.”

Of course, she slips up once in a while like the rest of us.

“But just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, it changes again. I eat when I’m stressed out, sometimes to the point where I didn’t realize how much I ate. Anything can be harmful, but it comforts me in a way,” she said.
