For the first weekend of December, Watch With Us would love to recommend some movies for you to check out.
Netflix has a fantastic library to choose from, but today we want to highlight three movies in particular that are on the lower end of the totem pole.
Our first pick is Christopher Nolan’s time-bending Tenet, a confusing film that is fun once you get on its trippy wavelength.
Our other picks are Quentin Tarantino’s underrated Western The Hateful Eight and a recently added indie flick called I’m Your Man.
Read about why these movies are worth watching below.
‘I’m Your Man’ (2021)
A German scientist named Alma (Maren Eggert) is persuaded to participate in a unique research study in order to receive funds for her own work. For three weeks, Alma must live with a humanoid robot named Tom (Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens), who has been designed to make her happy and whose artificial intelligence is programmed to make him her perfect life partner. But what can Alma learn about love and human relationships from something so artificial?
This sweet and funny rom-com satire is carried by great compatibility between its two leads, while it deftly considers questions pertaining to free will, what it means to be human and the nature of love. While I’m Your Man isn’t necessarily breaking new ground with its premise, its execution is unique, taking the overlap of romance and tech into delightful and surprising places.
‘Tenet’ (2020)
A CIA operative known only as the Protagonist (John David Washington) is recruited for a secret mission to prevent the future onset of World War III. An organization called “Tenet” informs the Protagonist of the concept of “inverted entropy,” causing objects to move backwards through time. Alongside his handler, Neil (Robert Pattinson), the Protagonist must figure out the origin of these inverted objects and why they are connected to an attack from the future.
Tenet’s release befell the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has gained a cult following in the years since. While the ideas presented in the film seem challenging — not helped by an excessively twisty narrative — Tenet is best enjoyed if you just turn your brain off and let the goofy sci-fi concepts espoused by beautiful actors wash over you.
‘The Hateful Eight’ (2015)
During a powerful snowstorm in post-Civil War Wyoming, a group of disparate travelers becomes stuck together in a haberdashery. A bounty hunter (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a newly appointed sheriff (Walton Goggins), a cowboy (Michael Madsen), a local hangman (Tim Roth), a Confederate general (Bruce Dern) and a second bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson). As the group settles in for the night, pressure and paranoia mount when it becomes clear that some people aren’t who they claim to be.
With a long runtime and a largely one-location setting, The Hateful Eight is a little less action-packed than director Quentin Tarantino’s other films, and thus requires a little more patience. But the incredible performances, claustrophobic atmosphere and gradual ramping of tension make the nearly three hours just fly by, and The Hateful Eight quietly ends up being one of Tarantino’s best films ever.
