Former Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax and his estranged wife, Cerina Fairfax, are dead following an apparent murder-suicide that has sent shockwaves through the political world and beyond.

Fairfax County police confirmed the tragedy on April 16, 2026, revealing that Justin, 47, shot and killed Cerina, 48, inside their home before turning the gun on himself. Their two teenage children were in the house when it happened.

Here is everything we know about the incident, the couple’s troubled marriage and Justin’s complicated past:

Justin Fairfax and Wife Cerina Died in Apparent Murder-Suicide

“Officers are on scene of a death investigation,” a police statement read on April 16. “An adult male and an adult female were found deceased inside a residence. Preliminarily, all parties are accounted for, and there is no threat to the community. Detectives are investigating.”

Fairfax County police officer Captain Chris Cosgriff claimed in a following statement that Justin appeared to have “shot the adult female before shooting himself in a domestic related incident.”

“We are withholding the identities until next of kin can be notified,” Cosgriff said. “Anyone who may have information that can assist detectives with their investigation are asked to call crime solvers … additional information will be released on our X account and on the FCPD blog when it’s available.”

Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed the identities of Justin and Cerina several hours later during a press conference.

“Former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife inside their home, and then shot and killed himself,” Davis said. “This has been an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce. So far what we know is what you know. There seems to be divorce proceedings that have been ongoing.”

According to Davis, the former politician shot Cerina “several times” before shooting himself in a different room of the house.

“From what I understand at this early stage, [Justin] was recently served some paperwork associated with an upcoming court proceeding. That apparently led to the incident last night,” Davis said.

Justin and Cerina Fairfax’s Children Were Home During the Murder-Suicide

Perhaps the most devastating detail to emerge from the investigation is that the couple’s two teenage children — a son and a daughter — were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

“Both of their children, teenagers … were in the house when it happened,” Davis said during the press conference. “That’s horrible news for the family, certainly a traumatic event for those children to live through.”

Inside Justin and Cerina Fairfax’s Marriage and Split

Justin and Cerina got married on June 17, 2006. They met while both were students at Duke University.

“Happy 11th Wedding Anniversary to the love of my life, Dr. Cerina W. Fairfax, DDS,” Justin wrote via Facebook in June 2017. “God has brought us a mighty long way, and we are deeply grateful and tremendously blessed. We got married on June 17, 2006 in #Arlington, VA outdoors at the Netherlands Carillon Gardens. We held the reception at Top of the Town. It was a blazing hot, but truly perfect day!”

“There has been a lot of laughter, love, smiling and amazement ever since,” he wrote at the time. “With you and our faith, impossible is nothing.”

After two decades of marriage, Justin and Cerina separated in July 2025. The divorce proceedings were not finalized at the time of their deaths.

In divorce documents viewed by People, Cerina claimed that Justin failed to pay his 50 percent share for their children’s private school tuition and extracurricular activities, as well as didn’t cover household expenses. She also claimed he failed to pay the mortgage on their home.

Justin later submitted a “demurrer” in court contesting Cerina’s claims, specifically her intentions to remain permanently separate despite the fact that they lived in the same home.

Cerina filed an opposition motion in response on February 27, 2026, in which she claimed Justin was an “alcoholic” and noted he “was accused of sexual assault by third parties.”

Justin was ordered to appear before a judge on April 10, 2026, and he filed two final motions in court three days later. In the filings, he claimed Cerina had filed her divorce complaint in “bad faith” because she had not “demonstrated an intent to permanently separate” since they still lived together.

Who Was Cerina Fairfax?

Cerina ran her own dental practice in Virginia.

“Dr. Fairfax considered it an honor and a privilege to serve the community of Fairfax, Virginia,” her website bio reads. “She was committed to serving not only her patients but others as well through participation in community outreach programs, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, vocational training programs and contributions to local charities and nonprofits intended to aid individuals and/or organizations helping those in need.”

A False Assault Claim in January 2026

Months before the murder-suicide, Justin called the police department in January 2026 over an alleged domestic violence altercation amid their divorce proceedings. He told 911 operators that Cerina had physically assaulted him at their house.

Police reviewed home surveillance footage and determined the claim was unfounded.

“We reviewed the cameras [in the home] and we corroborated that the alleged assault never occurred,” Davis said. “There was no arrest made, there was a report written but the allegation that Mr. Fairfax made in January that Mrs. Fairfax assaulted him was proven to be untrue.”

Inside Justin Fairfax’s Political Career and Sexual Assault Allegations

Justin served as the lieutenant governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022. In 2019, multiple women accused the politician of sexual assault, which he publicly denied.

Meredith Watson claimed Justin raped her in 2000 when they were students at Duke University.

“He knew that the year prior that I had been raped by someone and that nothing was done about it. And he was a very good friend to me,” Watson said on CBS This Morning in 2019. “Which is why I never would’ve expected anything like this from him.”

Watson detailed a disturbing encounter after the alleged assault, saying she tried to confront Justin at a party on campus.

“One night after it happened … I was at a party on campus and he came and so I went to leave, like, I left. And he followed me out and was sort of following after me, calling after me,” Watson said. “And I was just running trying to get away and then I finally stopped and I turned around. And all I said to him was, ‘Why? Why would you do that to me?’ And he said, ‘I knew because of what happened to you last year that if I got you in the right situation, you would be too afraid to say or do anything about it.’”

Watson claimed that Justin “knew what he was gonna do that night when he asked [her] to come over.”

Another woman, Vanessa Tyson, accused Justin of forcing her to perform oral sex when they attended the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004.

Virginia Democrats called for Justin to resign from his role following the accusations.

“We believe that allegations of sexual assault must be taken with the utmost seriousness. Given the credible nature of the sexual assault claims against Lieutenant Governor Fairfax, it has become clear he can no longer fulfill the duties and responsibilities of his post,” a statement from Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker read at the time. “While the Lieutenant Governor deserves due process in this matter, it is in the best interest of the Commonwealth that he goes through this process as a private citizen.”

The statement concluded, “The Lieutenant Governor no longer has our confidence or support. He must resign.”

Justin Fairfax Denied the Allegations

Justin publicly denied the accusations and claimed that the encounters with the women were consensual, per NBC News.

“I empathize with those who have lived for a long time feeling hurt and pain. And, while the evidence will continue to demonstrate the truth that I never assaulted either Dr. Tyson or Ms. Watson, I am able to hear the pain they have expressed; a pain I hope they are able to resolve and heal from,” he noted, in part, in a 2019 statement to CBS This Morning. “However, because I never assaulted either Dr. Tyson or Ms. Watson, I know that my actions cannot be the source of that pain.”

Fairfax also noted in his statement that he felt “so strongly regarding [his] innocence” that he “submitted [himself] to polygraph tests for each of the accusations against me.”

“I passed those tests because, as I have maintained from the very beginning, I did not assault either of my accusers,” he claimed.
