Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson is detailing how her kids handled the deaths of their fathers and both of her ex-husbands — Eric Anderson and Matthew Mogol.
“With the extreme loss that both of my children have experienced — my son at 21 abruptly. His father [Eric] was just a dream human being, he was like just the best person and the most dialed in father,” Tracy, 50, said on the Tuesday, October 14, episode of the “Parenting & You” podcast.
Tracy explained that her first husband, Eric, was a professional basketball player — but never would “inflict that” onto their son, Sam, in athletics.
“It was beautiful to watch that because you see so many parents living out their athletic dreams through pushing their kids,” Tracy said, before reflecting on her relationship with Eric. “I loved him deeply. The first thing his sister said to me when she called me to tell me that he had passed, the first thing out of her mouth was, ‘I always thought you guys would end up back together.’ I was like, ‘Karen, what are you saying to me right now? What are you saying?’”
She continued, “In my heart, I always believed we would end up back together. Because we were so young and I was the one who messed up our marriage. There was something in me every time we almost tried to get back together that didn’t feel like I deserved it because I messed up so bad. It made me feel like I didn’t deserve to have it back on some level. I loved him and respected him so much that I felt like, in a lot of ways, he was safer without me holding his heart in that way. I loved him deeply. That broke me wide open, for sure.”
Tracy was married to Eric from 1998 to 2008. He died of cardiac-related natural causes in 2018 at age 48.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Eric Anderson,” a rep for Tracy’s company, The Tracy Anderson Method, said in a statement to Page Six at the time. “Eric was a true friend to Tracy, a loving and incredibly dedicated father to their son Sam, and always willing to lend a helping hand to many of us at Tracy Anderson throughout the years. Our hearts are grieving with Tracy and her family during this difficult time.”
After her marriage to Eric, Tracy moved on with her second husband, Mogol. The twosome, who shared daughter Penelope, now 13, were married for two years before divorcing in 2013. Mogol died in 2020 at age 48 after a battle with cancer.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Matthew Mogol,” Tracy’s business representative told Page Six at the time. “Our thoughts are with his and Tracy’s young daughter, Penelope, during this devastating time.”
While reflecting on Matthew’s death, Tracy explained there were some differences between Mogol’s loss compared to Eric’s passing.
“[Penelope] experienced the same trauma of losing the biological father, but her relationship and my relationship with her biological father was very different,” Tracy said on Tuesday.
Tracy has since tied the knot with business manager Chris Asplundh in 2022.
