In addition to Jessica Simpson‘s role on All’s Fair including sex scenes and botched plastic surgery, her character was involved in a romance that appeared to take inspiration from Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson.
During the Tuesday, November 4, premiere of Ryan Murphy‘s newest Hulu show, Simpson played a new client at an all-female law firm run by Allura Grant (Kim Kardashian), Liberty Ronson (Naomi Watts), Emerald Greene (Niecy Nash), Milan (Teyana Taylor) and Dina Standish (Glenn Close).
“We’ve been married almost 3 years. I knew he had had one affair — probably more. So when he had told me to get plastic surgery, I couldn’t say no,” Simpson, 45, said as her botched surgery was revealed on screen. “My marriage was at stake.”
Flashback scenes showed Simpson’s character falling in love with a rockstar at a concert. Except if some viewers take out all context, the characters bear a striking resemblance to Lee, 63, and Anderson, 58, who were married from 1995 to 1998.
The fictional couple on All’s Fair has sex multiple times before he told Simpson’s character that she needed surgery after turning 40. She ultimately went under the knife to disastrous results but won big in court thanks to her legal team.
Later in the episode, Allura found out that Simpson’s character chose to seek revenge on her estranged husband by cornering him at a restaurant when he was on a date with a younger girl and burning his face with sulfuric acid. (Simpson, for her part, confirmed her split from Eric Johnson in January.)
According to the official synopsis, All’s Fair follows “a team of female divorce attorneys leave a male-dominated firm to open their own powerhouse practice.”
“Fierce, brilliant, and emotionally complicated, they navigate high-stakes breakups, scandalous secrets, and shifting allegiances — both in the courtroom and within their own ranks,” the description continued. “In a world where money talks and love is a battleground, these women don’t just play the game — they change it.”
In addition to the star-studded main cast, there will be appearances from Sarah Paulson, Matthew Noszka, O-T Fagbenle, Kathleen Garrett, Ed O’Neill, Judith Light, Steven Pasquale, Tamara Taylor and Lorraine Toussaint. The guest cast, meanwhile, includes Elizabeth Berkley, Grace Gummer, Brooke Shields and more.
“The theme every week is we have a story of a woman going through an unfortunate situation, and we’re there to help her,” Kardashian, 45, told People last month about the legal drama. “I think that the moral of this story for us as women is even if you are having a hard time, even if you don’t believe in yourself at that moment, your lawyers are there, your girls are there to pick you up and help you believe in yourself again.”
Murphy also praised the vision for the show. “For all of us on the All’s Fair group chat, we’re very astounded by this fact. In between talking about vaginal rejuvenation tips, we wrote, ‘What does this mean? How is this possible?’ We’re so grateful,” he said at a screening. “I myself pondered that question and then I kind of understood it. 134 million views of a trailer is something that’s usually granted to superhero movies. And when you think about it, with this cast, we’ve given the world what they really need right now, and that’s cultural superheroes.”
New episodes of All’s Fair premiere Tuesdays on Hulu.
