Air Force One did a flyover of Northwest Stadium in Maryland Sunday as President Trump arrived to watch and participate in a Veterans’ Day “Salute to the Service” halftime ceremony.
The presidential airplane roared low over the stadium as thousands cheered it on from the stands below, with footage from the window capturing the crowd and the plane itself cruising by on the jumbotron.
The president was scheduled to watch the home team Washington Commanders take on the Detroit Lions from the owner’s box in Landover stadium, where the team has been playing while awaiting the completion of a new stadium on its home turf in the capital.
That stadium – a $3.7 billion behemoth – is expected to be completed in 2030.
Tickets for Sunday’s game sold out after Trump’s attendance was announced, according to the National News Desk.
The game will include one of the NFL’s annual ceremonies honoring veterans ahead of Veterans’ Day on Tuesday.
His attendance at the game comes a day after ESPN reported he is keen to see the new stadium named after himself – which neither the president nor the Commanders have confirmed, but White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt didn’t dismiss when asked.
“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” she told The Post Saturday.
Trump’s relationship with the stadium project hasn’t always been rosy, however.
In July, he threatened to hold up the stadium project if the Commanders didn’t take back “Redskins” as its team name, which was ditched in 2022 for being offensive to Native Americans.
The Commanders have made no indications that the name would be changed.
Exactly how Trump intended to hold up the deal was unclear. President Biden signed a bill before he left office to transfer the new stadium’s land from the federal government to the city.
